The truck industry is fiercely competitive, with full-size models often stealing the spotlight with their exceptional capability, durability, and work ethic. However, models like the 2023 GMC Canyon upset that trend by proving that midsize marvels can also pack a heavy punch. A new road warrior is prepared to steal the show.

The 2023 Canyon promises more capability, technology, and power than its predecessors and will seriously challenge longstanding rivals like the Ford Ranger, Toyota Tacoma, and Jeep Gladiator. The AT4X is especially attractive as the most advanced off-road truck in GMC history, complete with state-of-the-art features like a head-up display and a suite of underbody cameras that engineer confidence when navigating any terrain. Google Built-In also makes its way into the midsize workhorse, ensuring drivers stay connected and informed wherever the road or trail leads.

  • Design

The 2023 Canyon builds on the popular AT4 trim of its predecessor and introduces the all-new AT4X and Edition 1 package to the fleet. With GMC flexing its off-road muscles, the Canyon AT4X is designed to answer the call of the wild. It’s a no-compromise road warrior from every angle.

    The AT4X's Off-Road Dimensions

Rolling off the production line ready for anything, the Canyon comes standard with an off-road suspension package that widens its track and adds two inches of lift. This growth spurt gives the truck an imposing stance and a standard ground clearance of 9.6 inches. However, the AT4X takes this a step further by adding a three-inch factory lift and 33-inch mud tires to boost the truck’s ground clearance to 10.7 inches and provide a 36.9-degree approach angle, a 24.5-degree breakover angle, and a 25-degree departure angle for optimal handling on technical terrain. The Edition 1 package ups the ante and equips the truck with exclusive off-road features that add remarkable value and capability to the already impressive warrior. So, what's included in the package?

    The Edition 1 Package

The Edition 1 outfits the Canyon with 17-inch beadlock-capable wheels and a first-in-class underbody camera system with a wash function that optimizes your visibility to give you a clear view of the terrain ahead. The package also equips the Canyon AT4X with an off-road front bumper with a safari bar, a 30-inch off-road grille light bar, and a COMEUP winch that ensures you can get the truck out of most dicey situations. In addition, the performance-rated front skid plate minimizes the risk of damage to the undercarriage, while the reconfigurable bed rail system and water-tight tailgate storage system guarantee you can haul all the necessary gear and more with ease.

  • Performance

A close up of the tire on a red 2023 GMC Canyon AT4X is shown.

The Canyon’s heartbeat comes from under its hood, where GMC ensures you have the power needed to explore any and every type of terrain. The Canyon comes standard with a 2.7L turbocharged engine that churns out 310 hp and a best-in-class 430 lb-ft of torque. This level of power gives the truck a best-in-class towing capacity of 7,700 lbs, proving midsize workhorses can pull their weight and more to get the job done.

    Off-Road Performance

Beyond its heartbeat, the Canyon’s dynamic performance is a direct result of several exclusive components working behind the scenes. For example, its ultra-wide stance (66.1 inches standard and 66.3 inches on the AT4X) enhances stability, just as the Multimatic DSSV dampers improve control and comfort on any terrain. The AT4X boosts this control with its front and rear locking differentials that optimize traction by locking both wheels at the same speed. Together, the Canyon’s athletic stance and performance-oriented components give you greater control over the truck and the confidence to explore different types of terrain.

    Drive Mode Selector

GMC takes this confidence to the next level, allowing you to harness the Canyon’s power to your specific driving needs. For example, the 2023 Canyon introduces two new drive modes: Terrain Mode and Off-Road Mode, along with the Normal Mode and Tow/Haul Mode. In addition, the AT4X offers Baja Mode, which is designed for high-speed off-road driving. Together, these modes give the Canyon a broad spectrum of capability, from efficiently navigating your weekday commute and towing heavy loads to maintaining control while rock crawling at low speeds. You can access these modes and critical insights into the Canyon’s performance in the all-new off-road performance display, which shows pitch and roll stats, g-force, altimeter, and more.

  • Technology

GMC promises the 2023 Canyon is the most technologically advanced in history, so how does the automaker deliver? Inside, the Canyon features a state-of-the-art driver cockpit that puts everything you need within immediate reach or view. The heart of this cockpit is the best-in-class 11-inch digital instrument cluster, a standard feature on the AT4X and Denali trims. The Elevation and AT4 trims offer the same screen in an 8-inch configuration.

    Driver-Focused Screens

The digital instrument cluster gives you insights into the truck’s performance, showing fuel level, speed, navigational cues, and more. You can also access this information via the class-exclusive 6.3-inch head-up display, which puts this data in a crisp display on the windshield ahead so that you never lose sight of the road. Moving to the center of the cockpit, you’ll find a class-leading 11.3-inch touchscreen display that is standard across the lineup. This screen gives you access to your smartphone via Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, but its usability doesn’t stop there.

    Connectivity

GMC outfits its infotainment system with Google Built-In, which puts features like Google Assistant and Google Maps within reach. The display is also home to the Canyon’s 10-view camera system, the most extensive setup in the segment that engineers confidence by optimizing your view from the driver’s seat. Fortunately, the infotainment system isn’t solely about work. It embraces the Canyon’s “work hard, play harder” mentality by offering plenty of entertainment features like SiriusXM and delivering an immersive, concert-like experience to every seat via a premium seven-speaker Bose audio system.

  • Safety and Driver-Assist

The 2023 Canyon lives up to its reputation as the most advanced model in history, courtesy of one of the most extensive lists of safety and driver-assist features in the segment. For 2023, GMC prioritizes your safety and equips every Canyon with the standard Pro Safety Package. This suite includes automatic emergency braking, IntelliBeam auto high beams that enhance your visibility, a following distance indicator to prevent tailgating, forward collision alert, front pedestrian braking with bicyclist detection, and lane keep assist with lane departure warning.

    The Safety Plus Package

GMC gives you every opportunity to upgrade the Canyon’s safety suite with advanced features that enhance your time in the driver’s seat. For example, you can add the Safety Plus Package and equip the truck with rear cross traffic braking that minimizes the potential for rear collisions by monitoring the back of the truck and bringing it to an emergency stop as needed. Blind zone steering assist is also part of the add-on and enhances visibility when navigating busy areas by providing steering assistance to avoid side collisions with vehicles nearby.

    The Technology Package

The Canyon’s safety and driver-assist features extend even further with GMC’s available Technology Package. This package includes rear pedestrian alert, which optimizes your visibility by actively alerting you to pedestrians crossing behind the truck. The HD Surround Vision camera is another feature that extends your view, giving you a 360-degree bird’s eye view of the truck. Lastly, GMC’s adaptive cruise control dramatically improves your time cruising at highway speeds by constantly monitoring the flow of traffic and adjusting the Canyon’s speed as needed to maintain a safe distance from vehicles ahead.
